Case Study: SoCal Resort & Casino

The Company

AAA 4 Diamond rated Southern California Luxury Resort and Casino is known industry wide for its superior gaming experience and customer service. To serve their clientele, customer experience and service is critical for return visits. To maintain their reputation and exceed customer expectations, business and IT demands high performance, modern security, and reliable solutions.

The Pain

The Casino has an abundance of friendly mobile cashiers that walk the casino floor 24 hours a day to make it easy for customers to have fun and play. The mobile cashiers use handheld scanners and a legacy wireless network to scan gaming vouchers for customers to cash out on the floor eliminating the need to stand in line at the cashier's cage. Since this service has been a critical part of creating a pleasant customer experience, the Casino wants to replace their wireless network with a solution that will provide consistent coverage, performance, security, control and resilience. The Casino serves customers 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so they have a very low tolerance for downtime.

The Solution

The Bird Rock wireless team recommended a modern wireless solution from Aruba Networks that consisted of Aruba instant access points (IAP) and Airwave for wireless management. IAPs enable customers to experience the benefits of controller based wireless solutions at a lower cost. Our team worked closely with the Casino team to deliver engineering, over the shoulder training and project guidance. Since the casino floor is running 24/7, our team supported the Casino team in replacing the existing wireless access points and testing. To maximize consistent coverage, Bird Rock and the Aruba team walked the floors of the casino with mobile cashiers and adjusted wireless frequencies as needed. In addition, our team supported the roll out of IAPs to the convention center and hotel for guests and staff members.

The Outcome

Today, mobile cashiers at the Resort & Casino have consistent connectivity to the wireless network wherever they roam the casino floor. Since each IAP can act as a wireless controller and have failover functionality, the wireless network is more resilient to a hardware failure. In addition, Aruba IAPs, using adaptive radio management, has the ability to auto-provision and correct coverage in response to a failure, maintaining network access to scanners.

The IT team also now has more visibility and control of their wireless network via Aruba Airwave. It allows them to view actual wireless coverage, monitor who is on the network and from which devices. It also gives them the ability to control what users (guest and staff) have access to throughout their property, both indoors and outdoors. In addition, they are able to generate comprehensive reports and get alerts on events such as rogue devices. The Bird Rock Wireless Team enables the Casino to worry less about their wireless and focus on making customers happy.
